It depends. In some regions, they are preferred. In other regions, they are mandatory. In North America, they are not standard practice, and should be avoided unless your appearance is directly relevant to the job.

That said, even in North America, there are times when you’d be better off using a photo resume or CV. For example:

  • If you happen to be an actor or actress, fashion model, or television personality, then your appearance matters to employers.
